Signs you need brake repair

Your brakes are the most important safety system on your vehicle. Call us if you notice:

  • Squealing or squeaking when you stop. Many pads have a built-in wear indicator that squeals when they’re getting thin.
  • Grinding or growling. This usually means the pads are worn to metal and are cutting into the rotors. Stop driving and call us.
  • Vibration or pulsing in the pedal or steering wheel. This is often from warped or unevenly worn rotors.
  • Soft, spongy, or sinking brake pedal. Possible causes are air or moisture in the brake fluid, a fluid leak, or a failing master cylinder.
  • Car pulls to one side when braking. This can mean a sticking caliper, a collapsed brake hose, or uneven pad wear.
  • Brake or ABS warning light. It can mean low brake fluid, a sensor problem, or an issue in the hydraulic or ABS system.
  • Longer stopping distances. This is especially dangerous on Spokane’s wet, icy and snowy winter roads.
  • Burning smell or a hot wheel after driving. A caliper or parking brake may be dragging.

Brake services we offer

  • Brake pad replacement. Front and rear pads, with premium aftermarket or OEM parts.
  • Brake rotor replacement. Replacing worn or warped rotors, often done together with pads (brakes and rotors).
  • Caliper repair and replacement. For sticking, leaking or seized calipers.
  • Brake lines, hoses and fluid. Leak repair and brake fluid service.
  • Brake inspections. Stay safe on the road with our free brake inspection. We examine your brake pads, rotors, calipers, brake lines, hoses, and fluid levels.
  • Car and truck brake repair, on all makes and models.

Our brake repair process

We follow the same four steps on every vehicle:

  1. Needs first. We start by listening. What are you hearing or feeling, and when does it happen?
  2. Accurate diagnosis. We inspect pads, rotors, calipers, brake lines, hoses and fluid, and use state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment for warning lights and ABS concerns.
  3. Clear recommendations. We explain what we found in plain language and give you time for questions. If your brakes are fine, or something can wait, we’ll tell you.
  4. Approved repairs only. No work starts until you approve it. We use premium aftermarket and OEM parts, and we responsibly recycle used fluids.

Brake repair FAQ

Why are my brakes squealing or grinding?

Squealing is often the pad wear indicator telling you the pads are getting thin. Grinding usually means the pads are worn through and metal is hitting the rotor. That damages rotors quickly and reduces stopping power, so have it checked right away.

How often do brake pads need to be replaced?

It depends on your vehicle, your pads and how you drive. Stop-and-go city driving and hills wear pads faster. The best way to know is an inspection that measures pad thickness and checks the rotors.

Do I need new rotors every time I replace my pads?

Not always. If your rotors are within spec and not warped or deeply grooved, they may be reused. We measure and inspect them and tell you honestly whether they need replacing.

Is it safe to drive with the brake warning light on?

A brake warning light can mean low brake fluid or a hydraulic problem, which affects your ability to stop. If the pedal feels soft or the car won’t stop normally, don’t drive it. Call us.

How much does brake repair cost?

It depends on what your vehicle needs. Pads alone are a smaller job than pads, rotors and calipers. We’ll inspect first and give you a clear quote before any work begins. Financing available.

Do you work on heavy-duty trucks and all makes and models?

Yes. Nef’s Auto Repair services all vehicle makes and models, including brake repair for cars, pickups, and heavy-duty trucks.
