Signs your car A/C needs repair
Most A/C problems start small and get worse, and a small leak today can mean a damaged compressor later. Call us if you notice:
- A/C blowing warm or only slightly cool air. This is usually low refrigerant from a leak, but it can also be the compressor, condenser, or an electrical problem.
- Weak airflow from the vents, even on high. Common causes are a failing blower motor or resistor, a clogged cabin air filter, or a blockage in the system.
- Cold air that comes and goes. It may be cycling on low refrigerant, a faulty pressure switch or relay, or a compressor clutch that’s slipping.
- The compressor clutch doesn’t engage. If you don’t hear the click when you turn the A/C on, and the center of the pulley doesn’t spin, the clutch, its fuse or relay, or low refrigerant may be to blame.
- Strange noises when the A/C is on. Squealing, grinding, rattling or knocking can come from the compressor, the clutch, or the blower motor.
- Musty, mildew or burning smells. Musty odors often come from moisture in the system or a dirty cabin air filter. A burning smell should be checked right away.
- Water leaking inside the car. A wet passenger-side floor usually means the A/C drain is clogged.
- Windows that fog up and won’t clear. Your defroster uses the A/C to dry the air, so a weak A/C can mean a slow-clearing windshield.

How we inspect your A/C and find leaks
We follow the same four steps on every vehicle:
- Needs first. We start by listening. Is the air warm all the time or only sometimes? Weak airflow? A noise or a smell? When did it start?
- Accurate diagnosis. We check vent temperature and airflow, confirm the compressor clutch engages, measure system pressures, and inspect the compressor, condenser, hoses, fittings, blower motor and electrical parts. If refrigerant is low, we track down where it’s leaking with UV dye or an electronic leak detector instead of just topping it off.
- Clear recommendations. We explain what we found in plain language and give you time for questions. If something can wait, we’ll tell you.
- Approved repairs only. No work starts until you approve it. We use premium aftermarket and OEM parts, then evacuate and recharge the system to the exact refrigerant amount your vehicle calls for, and confirm it’s blowing cold before you pick it up.
Why your A/C matters year-round in Spokane
Spokane summers get hot, and a car that’s been parked in the sun can be miserable, or even unsafe for kids, pets and older passengers, without working A/C. But your A/C isn’t just for summer. When you turn on the defroster, most vehicles run the A/C compressor to pull moisture out of the air, which clears a foggy windshield much faster on cold, damp winter mornings. A healthy A/C system helps you see clearly all year.

Car A/C repair FAQ
Why is my car A/C blowing warm air?
The most common cause is low refrigerant from a leak. Other causes include a compressor clutch that isn’t engaging, a failed compressor, a blocked or damaged condenser, a bad pressure switch, relay or fuse, or a blend door stuck on heat. We test the system to find which one it is before replacing anything.
What type of A/C system do you service?
We service R-134a A/C systems, found in most vehicles through the mid-2010s. Not sure which yours has? Check the sticker under the hood, or give us a call. Our technicians are EPA Section 609 certified for refrigerant handling.
Does my car just need an A/C recharge?
Maybe, but refrigerant doesn’t get used up like fuel. If it’s low, it’s leaking somewhere, so we find the leak first with UV dye or an electronic leak detector. Every A/C service then includes a full evacuate and recharge: we pull the old refrigerant, air and moisture out of the system and refill it with the exact amount your vehicle calls for. That gives an accurate fill instead of a guess, so the cold air lasts.
Why does my A/C smell musty or strange?
A musty or mildew smell usually comes from moisture and buildup in the system or a dirty cabin air filter. A burning or electrical smell can point to a failing blower motor, resistor or compressor clutch, so it’s best to have it checked soon.
Is it normal for my car to drip water when the A/C is on?
Clear water dripping under the front of the car on a hot day is usually normal condensation from the A/C. Water on the floor inside the car often means a clogged A/C drain. If the fluid is colored, sticky or smells sweet, it may be coolant, which is a different problem. See our car heater repair page.
Why does my A/C matter in the winter?
Most vehicles run the A/C compressor when you use the defroster, because it dries the air and clears foggy windows faster. If your A/C isn’t working, your windshield can take much longer to clear on cold, damp Spokane mornings.
How much does car A/C repair cost?
It depends on what’s wrong. Fixing a small leak and doing an evacuate and recharge is a much smaller job than replacing a compressor or condenser. We’ll diagnose it first and give you a clear quote before any work begins. Financing available.
