Technician testing coolant freeze protection at Nef's Auto Repair in Spokane
Winter-ready: we test your coolant’s freeze protection and your heater together.

Winter-ready check: Spokane usually gets its first freeze in early to mid-October, and freezing nights last into March. We test your coolant’s freeze protection and your heater at the same visit, so you’re not caught without heat or defrost on the first icy morning. Call (509) 808-5064 to book.

Signs your car heater needs repair

Your heater uses hot engine coolant to warm the cabin, so a heating problem is often really a cooling-system problem. Call us if you notice any of these:

  • Heater blowing cold or lukewarm air. Common causes are low coolant, a stuck-open thermostat, air trapped in the system, or a clogged heater core.
  • Heater core problems. Watch for a sweet, syrupy smell inside the car, a foggy or greasy film on the windshield, damp carpet on the passenger side, or coolant loss with no visible leak under the car.
  • Blend door or actuator failure. You may hear clicking or tapping behind the dash, get heat on one side only, or find the temperature doesn’t change when you turn the knob.
  • Thermostat stuck open. The temperature gauge stays low, the engine takes forever to warm up, and the heat stays weak.
  • Coolant leaks. Look for puddles under the car, a low coolant reservoir, or a warning light. A leak can starve the heater and lead to engine overheating.
  • Radiator leaks or damage. A leaking or clogged radiator loses coolant, which can leave you with weak heat and an engine that runs hot. We repair and replace radiators on all makes and models.
  • Water pump trouble. Weak heat at idle, a whining noise, coolant seeping near the front of the engine, or overheating.
  • Blower motor or blower motor resistor. The fan doesn’t blow at all, or it works only on certain speeds (often only on high).
  • Defroster not clearing the glass. Poor defrost is a safety issue in freezing fog and snow, and it usually has the same causes as weak heat.

Catching these early can keep a small repair like a thermostat or hose from turning into an overheated engine.

Our heater repair process

We follow the same four steps on every vehicle:

  1. Needs first. We start by listening. When did the heat stop? Is it cold all the time or only at idle? Any smells or noises?
  2. Accurate diagnosis. Our shop has state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment. We check coolant level and condition, test the thermostat, look for leaks, test the water pump, check heater core flow, and test the blower motor, resistor and blend-door actuators.
  3. Clear recommendations. We explain what we found in plain language and give you time for questions. If something can wait, we’ll tell you.
  4. Approved repairs only. No work starts until you approve it. We use premium aftermarket and OEM parts, and we responsibly recycle used coolant and fluids.

If your coolant is old or contaminated, we can also do a coolant system flush. Our high-end flush machine performs a complete 1-to-1 exchange, removing old coolant, rust and scale and replacing it with premium antifreeze to help protect your heater core and engine.

Car heater repair FAQ

Why is my car heater blowing cold air?

The most common causes are low coolant (often from a leak), a thermostat stuck open, air in the cooling system, a clogged heater core, or a failed blend door. A proper diagnosis finds which one it is, so you don’t pay for parts you don’t need.

Is it safe to drive with no heat?

Driving without heat is uncomfortable, and without a working defroster it can be unsafe in winter. If the lack of heat comes from low coolant or a bad water pump, your engine could also overheat. If your temperature gauge climbs, pull over and call us.

How do I know if my heater core is bad?

Common signs are a sweet smell inside the car, a foggy film on the inside of the windshield, wet carpet on the passenger side, and coolant loss with no visible leak. We can test heater core flow and pressure-test the cooling system to confirm.

Why does my heater fan only work on high?

That’s a classic sign of a failed blower motor resistor. If the fan doesn’t work on any speed, the blower motor, a fuse or the wiring may be at fault.

How much does car heater repair cost?

It depends on the cause. A thermostat or blower motor resistor is a much smaller job than replacing a heater core. We’ll diagnose it first and give you a clear quote before any work begins. Financing available.

Do you work on my make and model?

Yes. Nef’s Auto Repair services all vehicle makes and models.

When should I get my car heater checked?

Before the cold arrives. Spokane’s first freeze usually comes in early to mid-October. We can test your heater and your coolant’s freeze protection at the same visit. Call (509) 808-5064 to book.
