Signs of steering or suspension problems

Potholes, rough winter roads and worn parts take a toll on your steering and suspension. Call us if you notice:

  • Clunking, knocking or rattling over bumps. This often comes from worn sway bar links, ball joints, control arm bushings, or strut mounts.
  • Bouncy, floaty or nose-diving ride. Worn shocks or struts can’t control body motion, especially when you brake or turn.
  • Vehicle pulls or drifts to one side. Common causes are an alignment problem, worn tie rod ends, or a worn suspension component.
  • Steering wheel off-center, loose, or wandering. Worn tie rods, ball joints or steering components, or an alignment that’s out of spec.
  • Shaking or vibration in the steering wheel. This can come from worn front-end parts, wheel bearings or tires.
  • Uneven or rapid tire wear. Cupping, or wear on the inside or outside edges, usually points to alignment or worn suspension parts.
  • Humming or grinding that changes with speed. This is often a worn wheel bearing.
  • Hard steering, whining when you turn, or fluid under the front of the vehicle. These can mean a power steering pump, rack or hose problem.

Our steering & suspension repair process

We follow the same four steps on every vehicle:

  1. Needs first. We start by listening. What are you feeling or hearing, and when? Over bumps, when turning, or at highway speed?
  2. Accurate diagnosis. We inspect shocks, struts, ball joints, tie rods, control arms, bushings, wheel bearings and steering components, and check alignment and tire wear.
  3. Clear recommendations. We explain what we found in plain language and give you time for questions. If something can wait, we’ll tell you.
  4. Approved repairs only. No work starts until you approve it. We use premium aftermarket and OEM parts, and we recommend an alignment when the repair calls for it.

Steering & suspension FAQ

What’s that clunking noise when I go over bumps?

Clunks over bumps usually come from worn suspension parts: sway bar links, ball joints, control arm bushings, or strut mounts. Worn ball joints and tie rods affect steering control, so it’s best to have the noise inspected soon.

How do I know if my shocks or struts are worn?

Common signs are a bouncy or floaty ride, the nose diving when you brake, body lean in turns, leaking fluid on the shock or strut, and cupped tire wear. We inspect them and tell you honestly whether they need replacing.

Why does my car pull to one side?

Pulling can come from alignment, uneven tire pressure or wear, worn tie rods or ball joints, or a brake that’s dragging. We check the steering and suspension parts first, then the alignment, so the fix lasts.

Do I need an alignment after suspension or steering work?

Often, yes. Replacing tie rods, control arms, struts or other front-end parts can change your alignment angles. On cars, SUVs and pickups, a precision 4-wheel alignment afterward helps prevent uneven tire wear and keeps the vehicle tracking straight.

How much does steering or suspension repair cost?

It depends on your vehicle and what the inspection finds. One worn tie rod end is a much smaller job than replacing struts on both axles. We’ll diagnose it first and give you a clear quote before any work begins. Financing available.

Do you work on pickups and heavy-duty trucks?

Yes. We do steering and suspension work on cars, SUVs, pickups and heavy-duty trucks, on all makes and models. Wheel alignments are for cars, SUVs and pickups; we don’t align heavy-duty trucks.
